Summertime in Texas means hot sunny days and more free time on my calendar. It feels less rushed and a welcome break from the busy days of the winter and spring seasons. I usually find myself filling my time with gardening, reading, and being with family by the pool.
The summer season and health can go hand in hand! Here are some ideas on how to combine the two in order to have a healthy, fun summer.
Mind and Body Wellness
Make the most of the season through grounding techniques, connecting with friends, journaling/reading, and meditations.
I like breath work because it brings my body into a calm and restful state. It grounds me and helps me to be in the present so I can focus on loved ones and the beauty around me. During the summer, I enjoy time with friends while doing a “walk and talk” in the cooler part of the day. We get to connect, catch up on conversation, AND get our steps in!
Journaling and reading are activities that are very calming and restorative. They help me relax and relieve stress. I take time in the summer to rest by embracing a slower pace, reading for joy and pleasure, waking up to no alarm clock, and daily Scripture meditations.
I like breath prayers/meditations! These fill my mind with truth as I connect my heart with His.
- Truth about who I am in Christ.
- Truth about who God is and His character.
I encourage you to try one of these practices this summer! Start small and experience rest in your body, heart, and mind, too.
Nutrition and Hydration
Both hydration and nutrition are important year-round, but especially in the summertime! I stay cool and hydrated during the summertime by taking breaks after working outside for a set amount of time. I also focus on listening to my body. When I begin feeling dizzy or fatigued, I know it’s time to move to a cooler space and hydrate.
During the summer, it’s always nice and refreshing to take a dip in the pool. Also, I prioritize adding electrolytes to my water and eating hydrating fruits. Watermelon and cucumbers are two of my go-tos!
I stay nourished in the summertime by eating raw and fresh foods. I enjoy lightly cooked vegetables and salads, veggies and humus, grain bowls, and wraps. Some in-season produce that I enjoy this time of year are cucumbers from my garden, peaches from my peach tree, watermelon, tomatoes, and peppers.
Summer Soul Care for Empty Nesters
If this is your first summer as an empty nester, you might be feeling a bit out of place or working hard to adjust to the change. I have some encouragement for you today! Rediscover what brings you joy.
Start a new hobby or return to an old one that you shelved during the busy days of raising your children. Maybe you love to garden, read, create with your hands, hike…
Use this empty nester season as a time of reflection. Consider pulling out a notebook and pen and responding to these summer journal prompts:
- What am I grateful for?
- What am I excited about in this new season?
Lean into your faith. God is not finished writing your story. He has plans you may never have imagined. Dream with Him and see what new opportunities arise!
